By Leilani Momoisea

GBAK’s monstrous roller piece, 90 metres of pipeline sitting atop the ocean almost completely covered in paint, is a thing of legend – and not just in New Zealand’s graffiti circles. University students and...

MATT FRENCH

Matt French is an artist and a skateboarder from Washington, USA. He honed his art skill whilst in jail for graffiti and went on to do incredible work with artists such as Jim Phillips and VC Johnson at Pocket Pistols Skateboards. We caught up with him to talk about his history, his methods and life as a skateboarding artist...

Matt French grew up in a very artistic home, with his grandmother, mother and sister each working as competent artists. This environment was a natural inspiration for French to get painting himself.  Growing up, his art was pretty typical kids stuff. French reminisces, “There was this story about how, when I was about two or so, I did this scribble drawing and when my dad asked me what it was, I said it was a bear. Playing along, he asked me where the nose was. As the story goes, I said, ‘nose still in pencil’. My parents used to love to tell that one all the time.”
