GRAPHIC ATTACK! Urban Art and Graphic Design Experts Hit San Francisco
In early May this year, 16 of the world’s most prolific experts in urban art and graphic design hit the highly reputed 1:AM gallery in San Francisco under the suitably-titled “Graphic Attack!” show.
The explosive group exhibition was curated by Melissa McCaig Welles and Andrea von Bujdoss and highlighted an exciting clash of techniques and styles from a killer lineup including: Cern YMI, Ces, Cope2, Cycle, Doze Green, Greg Haberny, Hydro74, KEO TC5, Mare139, Morning Breath, Pure TFP, Queen Andrea, Siloette, Shepard Fairey, Trustocorp and Wane.
The day of the opening on Friday, May 7th Cope2, Pure TFP, Siloette and Queen Andrea blessed the outside walls of 1:AM with their classic east coast style of bubble letters, characters and pieces. They also had the opportunity to add some funk to a brand new Scion car parked in front of 1:AM. Much to the delight of the people passing by, the block was popping with colour and design and gave people a sense of what was waiting for them inside the gallery itself.
The eclectic crowd consisted of graffiti writers, artists, musicians, art aficionados and people from all walks of life. The atmosphere was full of excitement for the chance to have graf legends like Cope2 and Pure TFP hit up their black books alongside local legends Mark Bodé, Sundance, Apex, Estria, and Twick.
The crowd was not the only thing to write home about, as the artwork did not disappoint either. The exhibition showed a wide range of styles from the slick typography of Andrea von Bujdoss, aka Queen Andrea and the famous wood panel prints by Obey mastermind Shepard Fairey to TrustoCorp’s newest street sign, Cern’s imagery and Mare’s sculptures. The exhibition showed graffiti and graphic design at its absolute finest.
DJ Still Rob G rocked the wheels of steel, Gundlach Bundschu Winery and Vitamin Water kindly provided the beverages and Scion - the official gallery sponsor of Graphic Attack! - was kind enough to loan 1:AM the car and a photo booth for people to help the gallery goers remember the quality night. –1AMSF.com
