Scott Radke

Words by Suzy Synchronome

Under lightning-struck weeping willow trees, within coal-covered caves, shifting with swampy shadows, journeying through baron icy wastelands, within the clouds of heaven and deep down in the darkest worlds below. Weaved between the inner sights of the imagination… the creatures of Scott Radke shuffle and sway.

Breaking the morbid, foggy silence of the salty sea, is a sudden, wild and husky holler of a fearful fisherman, cackling at a human-octopus being, as it floats over the water, eyes wide open with a gaze deeper than the ocean itself.

Far off on the horizon that is the shoreline of an unknown icy land, a coach of witches charge on, by the pulling power of human-rabbit beings, under the watchful eye of two, tall and lanky super-guardians.

Within the rugged, rocky land all around, spotted violet human-meerkat beings sense the approach of the witch-filled coach. They scatter and flee for higher land, where the sacred human-swan beings live, rule and protect with their exquisite majesty.

It is a world that is natural, mythical and torturous. It is the realm where spirit and soul meet between artist and viewer. It is a place that moves, a place that feels. It is a place of mystery and wonder. It is the world where Scott Radke works… safely, quietly and patiently.

Scott Radke grew up in the middle-class suburb of Strongsville, Ohio. He kept to himself as a youngster and spent much of his time near his house, exploring the woods and it’s multitude of creatures. In those years, the only art in his life was the calligraphy and other works of his aunt, Sharon Hanse, who would later encourage and teach Radke to draw.
